Surgeons at The Wesley Hospital have begun using a robotic device, the “da Vinci” Surgical System, to perform innovative minimally invasive prostate cancer surgery.

Image Robotic surgery is a form of laparoscopic surgery and is performed through small abdominal incisions using a camera and other instruments (rather than making larger incisions as in open procedures). The instruments are remotely manipulated robotically by the surgeon at a workstation within the operating theatre.

Mr Gerard Wyvill, General Manager of The Wesley Hospital, said the use of the “da Vinci” Surgical System had facilitated a major advancement in the hospital’s minimally invasive surgical and clinical profile.

“We are pleased to be able to offer this technology to patients at The Wesley Hospital. The introduction of robotically assisted surgery is another example of the Wesley’s commitment to the ongoing enhancement of our clinical services,” Mr Wyvill said.

There are many benefits to the patient from this type of surgery including less post operative pain, less blood loss, less scarring, shorter hospital stay, and faster return to normal activities.

Dr Luis Prado, Director of Medical Services at The Wesley Hospital, said the Wesley was the Centre of Excellence for Prostate Cancer Care.

“The introduction of the “da Vinci” Surgical System compliments our existing prostate cancer service. The Wesley offers comprehensive prostate cancer care including radiotherapy, brachytherapy and all forms of surgery including open, laparoscopic and now robotically assisted prostate surgery – it’s all available on the one site at The Wesley Hospital. This is complemented by a  dedicated team of nursing staff and a urological ward.”

“In consultation with their Urologist, patients have access to the treatment option that is most appropriate for them,” Dr Prado said.

There are currently seven “da Vinci” Robots operational in Australia – five of which are located within private hospitals in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth and now in Brisbane.
